• Human development in East Java in 2020 has increased again. In 2019, East Java's HDI reached 71.50 and subsequently rose in 2020 to reach 71.71 or grew 0.30 percent.
• Surabaya was recorded as having the highest HDI with an HDI achievement of 82.23, while the lowest HDI in East Java was recorded in Sampang with an HDI of 62.70.
• Surabaya City, Malang City, Madiun City and Kab. Sidoarjo is recorded as having an HDI in the "very high" category, while the other 20 districts / cities are in the "high" category, and 14 regencies / cities in the "medium" category.
• During the period 2019 to 2020, the health and education components experienced an increase. Newborns have the chance to live up to 71.30 years, an increase of 0.12 years. Children aged 7 years have the opportunity to attend school for 13.19 years, an increase of 0.03 years. Meanwhile, on average, the population aged 25 years and over had studied for 7.78 years, an increase of 0.19 years. Only the adjusted per capita expenditure component fell, from Rp. 11.74 million (2019), to Rp. 11.60 million (2020) or decreased by Rp. 138 thousand due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
